People in Need is looking for a (SOFTWARE DEVELOPER ) for its mission based in NW Syria.

Duty location: Sarmada, NW Syria
Starting date: March 2022
Contract length: until 31 December 2022, with potential extension based on funding.

End date of application: 09 March 2021


PIN has been working in Northern Syria since 2012, providing emergency relief and early recovery support to conflict-affected communities. Programmes for conflict-affected communities in Syria focus mainly on Emergency Food Assistance, WASH, and Education, in addition to Early Recovery and Livelihoods activities. PIN’s contribution to the Syria humanitarian response is amongst the largest, with an annual turnover of over $30 million, engaging over 350 full- time staff members across Northern Syria and cross-border response hubs in neighbouring countries.


PIN looks for a motivated colleague to help us develop and implement Humansis software across Syria. The Software Developer will cooperate closely with PIN teams providing humanitarian aid on the ground, as well as with Humansis project managers and developers based in Prague.
Humansis is a unique web-based application developed by People in Need in cooperation with external software development company with a vision to improve the speed, efficiency, transparency, and accountability of humanitarian aid delivery. It provides an open source and secure data platform for humanitarian needs, such as storing demographic data and targeting aid according vulnerability criteria. The system also provides digital services for the delivery of cash, goods and e-transfers (e-vouchers, mobile money etc.). It includes extensive mapping and advanced reporting functionalities. The project is now in a piloting phase.

LINE MANAGER: Programme Team Leader with technical link to Head of Humansis

• Independently implement user stories’ requirements into functional output
o Using PHP / SQL / GIT, Gitlab
• Closely cooperate with team of developers and project management team
• Participate on Agile Ceremonies (Stand-up, Planning, Grooming, Demo, Retro)
• Identify improvements of the system from user perspective and participate on making sure these improvements are addressed in system

• Other tasks assigned by employee’s Line Manager corresponding to actual needs of PIN, and projects.
• Understand and adhere to the PIN National Staff Handbook, PIN Code of Conduct and Key Policies and relevant guidelines


Essential experience & knowledge:
• Knowledge PHP Symphony
o Object oriented programming PHP 7+ must
o Design patterns
o Self-Documenting code
• Knowledge of SQL / MySQL - at least 5.7+
• Experience with Version Control preferably - GIT, Gitlab
• Fluent/advanced English and Arabic
• Experience with Back-end/Front-end architecture
• User experience with JIRA/Confluence (Attlassian stack)
• University degree in IT (BSc) or 4+ years of experience in the field
• Experience with Agile/Scrum IT delivery process

Desirable skills:
• Strong analytical skills and creative problem-solving skills
• Good orientation in how software and operating systems work
• Excellent listening and questioning skills, combined with the ability to interact confidently with clients to establish what the problem is and explain the solution
• Ability to prioritize workload and work under strict deadlines
• Methodical, thorough and attentive to detail
• Interest in innovations and technical solutions in the humanitarian sector
